VinniexCharley - 'Sweethearts' Keychains by Artaith-21 VinniexCharley - 'Sweethearts' Keychains by Artaith-21
For more VinniexCharley love ------> :iconvinnie--x--charley:

I was trying to get this uploaded before midnight so that it would officially count as a Valentine's Day upload, but nothing ever is that simple :XD:  The battery in my Lumix camera was shot beyond being able to be charged and there was no way I was going to find a replacement battery for it anywhere on such short moment's notice ( I'll probably have to order one, most likely ), so I grabbed my new Canon HD video camera to take some still shots, and wouldn't you know, I spent hours fighting the fact that the computer would not recognize the camera to get said photos off the camera.  Yeesh.

Anyway, this is just an adorkable design I made for some VinniexCharley keychains.  I made about 7 keychains total ( if you don't count the ones that didn't survive 'the process' ) and here is a picture of 2 slightly different variations.  They are made of plastic, with a clear, heat pressed enamel coating on top to make them smooth and shiny.  I also made the chain parts entirely myself- stringing the links together, stringing the beads, doing the tiger tails and crimping, and attaching the lobster claws and charms.  I have learned that I will never be a jeweler, for I am far too klutzy.  My floor is strewn with stray beads and and sterling silver chain links.  For every bead or link I attached, at least 3 popped out of my fingers and got lost on the floor beforehand :XD:

The one in the top left is slightly lighter in color, while the one with the beaded heart chain is darker.  I played around with different approaches to try and see what kind of color saturations I could get each time.  Also, there are a few other variations I did, like a different style heart shape and the keychain part attaches slightly behind Vinnie's head to allow the keychain to hang more in a diagonal manner ( which I actually prefer on my keyrings ), but I don't have any photos of those included here because I haven't done the enamel coating for them yet.

Anyway, these things are always fun to make and I'm working on more BMFM designs ( after I finish that danged Apriltello one I promised Aery 9_9 ).  The little joyful spirit of this keychain was inspired by Tom Tataranowicz's most recent email conversations with a fellow VinniexCharley wanker, in which he stated 'they are soul mates'. :date: It made my little lovesick heart beat ^_^

Happy Valentine's Day!

Don't get me wrong, but i always believed it was Modo who got Charley, because Vinnie tried so hard and got nowhere, whilst the big guy did so little, yet still impressed her.

Wow- how far did you get in the series?  XD  It was pretty obvious by the end of the third season how close Vinnie and Charley got- Vinnie even got a kiss from her XD

And that's just Modo's personality.  He's so uberly sweet, especially to the ladies.  He was such a gentleman to the harpy, Billie Monnie, even though she turned out to be a villainess XD

Your welcome! And they're the only couple I ship. I do not ship Throttle/Corbin probably because I love Throttle and don't want to share him.

Actually, I just came up with a good idea for one- it will just take some craftiness to make sure the design makes it work correctly ^_^

Thank you ^_^

These ones I won't sell since I technically can't profit off of copyrighted characters ( though I can give them away as gifts, prizes for contests, or trade them as part of a mutual art trade, or sell them only if the money goes to charity ), but I will eventually sell custom designs for commissions in the future ( ie. people want to commission something similar of their own characters ) ^_^

Thanks so much!  I really appreciate it because I've experimented a lot over time to find a method to craft really quality looking ones that are both sturdy and durable, but actually look and feel nice.

They're made out of special shrink film that harden to a thick plastic when you fire them ( basically like shrinky-dinks which were really popular in the 70s ). You can use an embossing tool to do it, but I prefer to use the oven and I keep them pressed between heavy, non-acid mounting board when I do it to make sure they don't warp or ripple and come out a uniform thickness.  My favorite brand to use is Grafix.

It took me awhile to find a good way to do the enamel.  A lot of people buy a sealant spray but it's really scratchy and sticky looking, and I tried some bottled liquid types that brush on but those always seemed to dry really cloudy with little air bubbles in them.  I finally found an enamel that comes in little salt crystal form that turns to liquid when heated and then hardens, and after much practice, finally got that process down.  It's my favorite enamel method now.  It's perfectly uniform with no air bubbles, no clouding, and so shiny and glossy and smooth to the touch- you can see your reflection in the keychain's surface XD

As for the beading and chain parts- that's just buying the parts and beads and wires at general hobby stores, flipping through a few pages of a 'how-to' book while standing at the book section of a crafts store, and then just winging it XD. I do have a good local friend who makes all her own jewelry and sells it at local shows, so I may ask her for a sit-down session one day to get a little bit more know-how in that area for future reference.  But for the most part, that was just taking pliers and playing around.

I've played with shrink film myself, but I've only done pictures with ink and colored pencil. Were you able to use the stuff with your printer? Is that how it looks so good?

Yep.  Grafix makes sheets that you can run through your printer.  They come in packs of 6 which can be expensive if you jam or screw up or size wrong or do the color-output wrong, so I test-print on several sheets or regular copy paper before running the Grafix film through.  I also have a fairly decent photo printer ( was about $500 new ) so that probably helps with color quality but I think any inkjet will do.  Keychains are one thing, but you can easily mass-produce these into magnets, pinbacks, barrettes, etc. etc.  with the digital method which is why I prefer it.  With the traditional 'draw it and color it by hand method' you get only one shot- if it gets burned or warped or something, it's ruined and it's done for.  At least by this method, you just print off another one and try again.  If the finished design comes out too dark, go back into Photoshop and change some colors or lower the opacity and try again.  The traditional method is just a one-shot, keep-your-fingers-crossed deal.

Ah, that explains the quality. I have a cheapo 20 buck printer. But maybe I'll get some sheets and run them through the old girl and see what the results are. Thanks for the info!

No problem!  Perhaps enough pre-tweaking with the print settings in Photoshop or something might be just enough that your printer will work just fine.

I've never even tried it before so I should do that first. Maybe after the shrinking, the printing will look okay either way lol

Very true- plus, a lot of the color saturation comes from the shrinking process anyway.  I usually have to crank down my image's opacity to 40% at least before I print and shrink it, so maybe your printer not really being made for photo prints and etc. might work in your favor XD
